Retaining its mix of traditional Thai markets, where you can haggle to you hearts content, modernisation has meant that there are now more designer outlets and hip fashion stores than you can shake a stick at.

For those who love to shop, it is a dream come true. The sheer scale of the city means that the shops go on forever. Here are a few of the most popular shopping areas to try.

Banglamphu Market

This is a really great budget market. Do not come here looking for designer threads, but if you are looking for a mind-blowingly huge selection of cheap clothing, silver jewellery, food stalls and footwear, you have come to the right place. There is a great selection of fabric on sale too, and you are free to haggle all day long.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Open from 9am to 6pm, and easily accessible via the Skytrain, it welcomes visitors every weekend from all over the city.

Patpong Night Market

If a day of shopping is not enough for you, then the various night markets of Bangkok allow you to shop all night too. Patpong in particular is a popular market for tourists. Be prepared to haggle, as a guide you should be able to get 50% off the stated price for most goods. Cheap clothing, as well as music and DVDs are on sale, and you will find the market between the Surawong and Silom roads.

Pak Khlong Market

Shopping til you drop is definitely feasible at Pak Klong as it is open 24 hours a day. Formerly a huge fruit and vegetable market, flowers are now its main trade, with the market selling wholesale as well as market produce. New stock arrives between 1am and sunrise every day.

Pratunam

A maze of alleyways and stores, this shopping district specialises in fabrics and clothing. A whole range of clothing is on offer, even formal wear and three-piece suits. Wholesalers also buy from Pratunam, so if you buy in bulk you will get wholesaler discount too.
