Also known as the River of Grass, the Everglades region near Miami is a natural wonder. Still largely under-explored, this park is more than a million acres big and is swimming with crocodiles, and teaming with Florida panthers and manatees.

As well as tourists, explorers and researchers travel to the park from across the globe to study its wildlife and flora. There are many activities on offer besides exploring the area on foot. Bikes and canoes are for hire, or take a guided boat trip. You can also camp out here too.

After being home to generations of Native Americans, and then to settlers from overseas, the Everglades was finally made a national park in the 1930s. Congress signed an act decreeing that the area was to be protected and used only as a park land.

Now the third largest national park in America, the Everglades in 1934 was just short of 500,000 acres of land. With increasing acquisitions of private, state and federal lands, the park has now grown to its 1.5million acre size.

Those looking to visit the Everglades National Park will find it open seven days a week. A seven-day permit will ...
... cost $10 per vehicle and can be bought at the main park entrance. Pedestrians and cyclists will have to pay $5 for a seven-day ticket.

The park is at its busiest in the cooler winter months of December to April. This is because the summer heat attracts so many mosquitoes that visits can be uncomfortable. It is best to call ahead before you visit just to double check which facilities and which areas of the park are open to visitors at that time.

Your first stop-off upon entering the park should be at the Visitor Centre, where you will see lots of illustrative dioramas of the park, and you can pick up some free maps too to help you find your way around.

The Visitor Centre also puts on activities for children and families, and grown-ups to, who are interested in exploring the park and finding out about its unique wildlife. Their website will list the activities to be held each year.
