Protonix is in a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.it is used to treat erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

MECHANISM :

Pantoprazole is in a class of drugs named proton pump inhibitors (PPI) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Other drugs in the same class include lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec) and rabeprazole (Aciphex). Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome that are caused by stomach acid. How to use?

Take this medicine by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
If you are taking the tablets, you may take them with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not split, crush, or chew the medicine. Doing so may destroy the drug.
If you are giving the granules through a tube into the stomach (nasogastric or gastric tube), ask your health care professional for detailed instructions on how to properly mix and give it.
