Modern dental healthcare has advanced to the stage where it is possible for Rutherford residents to have a new set of non-removable, aesthetic and immediately functional teeth placed in as little as one day. However, a recent study published in the online journal Frontiers in Public Health reports that a staggering percentage of the population simply isn’t receiving the preventative healthcare they need to remain in good oral health. As a result, gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss are pervasive problems across the country. In fact, tooth decay is the most common disease affecting the modern American, second only to the common cold.

“There is a lack of awareness and adequate access to preventative healthcare...”

Tens of millions of people in the United States have lost all of their natural teeth, while hundreds of millions more are on the fast track to being edentulous (not having any teeth left). While there are sophisticated dental procedures designed to address tooth loss, such as All On 4® dental implants, NJ dentists say that what we’re really lacking is the awareness of the importance ...
... of good oral hygiene and adequate access to preventative healthcare.

The survey published consisted of an analysis of the data collected between 1999 and 2008 from telephone calls to almost 650,000 middle aged and older Americans. While there has been an upward trend in the number of people receiving preventative dental healthcare over that period, and most probably since, as much as 43% of New Jersey residents were, in 2008, still not getting the regular professional attention and cleanings needed to maintain good oral health.

“There is a divide amongst race and ethnicity groups…”

Additionally, the data gathered suggested that there is a great divide amongst race and ethnicity groups, with 77% of Asian Americans, 76% whites, 57% African Americans and 62% of Native Americans and Hispanics receiving adequate preventative care. The reasons for this are varied and include factors such as income, health insurance, education and general access to qualified dental healthcare professionals. So, while there are procedures designed to provide Rutherford residents with new teeth in one day, such as All On 4® dental implants, these don’t do much good if patients can’t afford them or don’t have access to the NJ dentists qualified to perform them.

The biggest problem, more so than finances, is a lack of awareness, because in most cases, tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss can be prevented with good oral hygiene and scheduled visits to the dentist, which isn’t prohibitively expensive. Instead, most of the Americans surveyed say that they rarely floss, brush once a day and haven’t seen the dentist in years. It’s no surprise then that oral health in this country is so at risk.

“Women tend to receive better dental healthcare preventative care than men…”

Other results yielded by the survey indicate that the Americans who have health insurance are 138% more likely to receive proper preventative care, which makes sense. Additionally, women tend to receive better preventative care than men, while smokers tend to see the dentist less frequently. The latter is a concerning problem since the tobacco has a well-understood detrimental effect on dental health.

The surgeons and prosthodontists who qualified to give patients new teeth in one day say that there is a desperate need for greater public awareness and that these should be targeted at middle-aged and older Americans. We also need more qualified dental healthcare professionals,/b> and better access to this kind of care.
