If you live in an area where there is any kind of harsh weather to contend with such as snow, wind, and rain, or even the hot, blazing sun -- you need to have a place to park your car that protects it (and you) from these harsh elements. Unfortunately, many of us don't have enough garage space (or even a garage at all) at home in which to store an automobile or other vehicle. If building a traditional cinder block garage is too pricey, a less expensive and easier alternative to building or expanding a garage is to buy a metal carport or garage.

Metal carports and garages are available in a number of different sizes and styles and are easy to order, install, and use. These versatile steel structures are available virtually everywhere and can be installed almost anywhere. All you need to put in a steel building is a concrete slab or level ground. Many steel building companies will even deliver and install a metal carport or garage for free.

A single vehicle sized metal carport or garage is generally around 12 feet wide, 21 feet long, and five feet tall. A carport or metal garage that can house two vehicles will ...
... be about the same dimensions, but six feet wider (18 feet). Even wider carports or garages can be purchased which will accomodate three or more cars. These can run from 26 to 40, 50, or even 60 feet.

Different roof and eave designs and varying colors can be ordered for any type of metal garage or carport to suit your needs, along with a choice of steel gauge -- usually 12 or 14. The lower the number, the stronger the guage of steel. Higher gauge steel also carries a higher cost though, making 14 guage a more cost efficient option. Metal building roofs are usually of a lighter guage of steel, such as 29 guage.

Some metal carport and garage designs also offer the option of vertical roof panels which run from the peak side of the carport to aid with drainage and are recommended in areas that see higher than average rain or snowfall. Other options for metal carport and garage modification include gable ends for the front, back, or for both ends of the building, which add to the aesthetic value of the metal structure if it is in a highly visible area - adding curb appeal. This can be a very important consideration for someone who wants to install a metal carport or garage right next to their home.

Other options such as metal sides can be put on carports and garages too in order to better protect you and your automobile from the wind and weather. Metal garages are usually heavy enough to handle rough weather, but for an additional charge, most steel structure companies can anchor your carport with mobile home anchors or concrete to add stability and safety. Metal carports and garages can house more than just cars. RV's, boats, motorcycles, ATV's, or snowmobiles can also be kept in one.

When looking for a metal carport or garage, be sure to do your research to assure that the company you choose has the right one to suit your needs. Ask about things such as shipping and installation costs and inquite about any additional fees that may be added for modifications, styles, and colors. Also ask about warranty or repairs on your metal building and how they are handled. Finally, find out how long it will take to deliver and install your metal carport. Many times they can be installedin two weeks or less from the date on which they are ordered.

Here's a good resource to get metal carports and metalgarages.
