A lot of people seem to be lost when they hear “communication illustration.” It doesn’t ring a bell and definitely not one of the more familiar aspects of illustrations. However, one doesn’t really have to think deep on what communication illustration is. The term just refers to the type of illustrations that send messages across through images. They can either be sketches, paintings, and photos. These are kinds of non-verbal communication that speak through images and are very useful and powerful in depicting meanings and messages. In fact, illustrations such as these are widely used in books and other print materials intended for children.

What do communication illustrations have to be?

This type of illustrations is usually detailed and intricate, as every single part of the illustration has to convey something. Every single detail adds to the entire message that the illustration wants to send to its readers and viewers. Every single stroke, colour, line, and shadow should have a purpose, unlike illustrations that ...
... are created only for the purposes of aesthetics. Communication illustration is a little hard to do because it is more complex and therefore requires creativity and imagination. These illustrations communicate without words, so to speak.

What should a communication illustrator have to be?

It is expected of a communication illustrator to be good at expressing different meanings and emotions to illustrations without having to put on words for captions. He or she should be well-trained in storytelling through visual images as these illustrations speak for themselves. It is like watching a silent film without lines, with only the images presenting the story themselves. It shouldn’t be a problem, though, because most illustrators have been trained enough to express themselves through their artworks, and creativity and imagination are their best qualities.

The communication illustrator should also be adept at dealing with different target markets. It is always important to identify the target market and be able to devise ways on how to tailor it. By defining the target market, it will be easier for the illustrator to communicate with them through his images. For kids, for example, the use of lighter shades will be a big factor as kids like it better than darker shades. If it’s for adults, then darker shades and thicker strokes will be much more appreciated. The mood and the theme of the illustrations dictate so much, too, on how the illustrators will have to create his masterpiece.

Getting the details gets the job done

For communication illustrators, it always boils down to getting all the necessary details, big and small, from the clients. Communication illustrations are more demanding compared to other illustrations simply because they are not merely expressions and creativity of the illustrators, but rather, they are messages the clients would want to tell the target market. Therefore, every message conveyed through the images is important and done with purpose. It is now the task of the illustrator to get the job done. After all, there’s an equally good pay intended for communication illustrators should the clients get pleased with the works.
