Welcome to the second installment of this four-part article series on endodontic therapy or root canals. This treatment has the worst and most unfair of reputations of all the dental procedures, which is a terrible shame because it is done to save the lives of teeth that have sustained damage or decay that would otherwise necessitate its extraction and a visit to the “Same Day” dental implants dentist in Chicago!

In our previous article post, we looked at what root canal therapy is and why it’s sometimes necessary (for the treatment of damage to the tooth or an infected pulp chamber). Before we take a look at the procedure itself, an experienced New Teeth specialist in Chicago explains to us why this procedure is one of the most important treatments offered by dentists…

The Importance of Endodontic Therapy

Your teeth are perfectly designed for the various tasks they are required to perform. In spite of how far the field of teeth replacement has come and in spite of the wider availability of Same Day dental implants in Chicago, nothing can rival the durability, comfort, aesthetics and functionality ...
... of your own biological technology. This is why a dentist will opt to perform a root canal treatment on a damaged or infected tooth before recommending dental implants.

“The treatment of an infected tooth is extremely important,” explains a New Teeth specialist in Chicago. “This is not only to prevent the tooth itself from requiring extraction, but to prevent the surrounding teeth and jawbone from becoming affected. Infection within the pulp chamber of one tooth can migrate into the surrounding bone, leading to the possible development of extremely painful abscesses. This poses a terrible health risk should bacteria from this pocket of infection get into the blood stream. In short, ignoring an infection can permit it to spread to other parts of the body and this is why we urge patients to seek prompt attention.”

But how do you know if you have an infected tooth? And how does the dentist make a diagnosis?

Signs and Symptoms You May Require Endodontic Treatment

“An infected pulp chamber may not initially cause you much pain,” says the Same Day dental implants dentist. “But with time you will certainly notice one or more of the following symptoms…”

Pain when any pressure is applied to the tooth, such as when you bite down.
Prolonged sensitivity to heat and cold.
Discoloration of a tooth, even if it doesn’t hurt.
Swelling and inflammation of the gums around the tooth.

Before these symptoms are allowed to develop, you may require a root canal if you notice visible damage to the crown of the tooth.

How Does the Dentist Make a Diagnosis?

According to the specialists who give Chicago residents new teeth, there are many simple tests a dentist can perform to determine whether a tooth is infected. These include the following:

Placing a heat or cold pack next to the tooth to determine if it is more sensitive than the surrounding dentition.
Examining the gums around the affected tooth for swelling and inflammation.
Gentle tapping on the tooth to see whether it responds painfully.
X-rays of the problematic tooth and surrounding jawbone will reveal any pockets of infection or abscesses in the form of a dark spot at the tip of the root and/or a widening of the ligament that secures the tooth to the jaw.

There are other tests used by new teeth specialists in Chicago to determine whether a tooth requires endodontic therapy, an example of which is an electric pulp tester. This dental tool sends tiny electric currents through the tooth – don’t worry, it’s painless – and helps your dentist decide whether the tissues within your tooth are alive or not.

Stay Tuned for Part 3
