Mid Michigan Mri Offers Patients The Utmost In Patient Care And Quality Diagnostics
An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging test is a medical diagnostic test that uses strong magnetic fields to create pictures of the internal organs of the body. Doctors use this test in conjunction with other imaging tests such as x-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds to create a comprehensive picture of the inside of the body. These tests are used to detect abnormalities in both soft tissues and bones.
When an MRI test is ordered, the patient will be placed inside the MRI machine for a period of around 30 minutes in order to take the number of images needed for a diagnosis. The procedure is completely non-invasive, however some people that are claustrophobic may require mild sedation. The images are digital and are saved on a computer for review by a radiologist, or a doctor who specializes in reading imaging test results. These results and the radiological interpretation are then sent to the primary care physician for treatment recommendations.
Why It Is Done
MRIs are ordered by doctors for a number of different reasons. MRIs can detect internal bleeding, the presence of tumors, and even infection. MRIs are often performed ...
... done for the:
Head. MRI tests can determine whether or not tumors or bleeding is occurring in the brain as a result of a stroke or aneurysm. MRIs can also detect issues with the nerves of the eyes or ears.
Chest. MRIs are often ordered to determine whether or not damage exists in the heart or lungs. MRIs can also be used to detect the presence of breast or lung cancer.
Blood vessels. When an MRI is used to check the adequacy of blood flowing through the arteries and veins it's called MRA, or magnetic resonance angiography. MRIs are used to detect blockages or small tears or leaks in the vessels. In most cases, a contrast dye is used in order to detect very small defects.
Abdomen and pelvis. MRIs are often used to detect tumors, bleeding, infections, or blockages in organs found in the abdomen like the liver, kidneys, pancreas, gallbladder and urinary bladder. The test is generally used to look for tumors, bleeding, and infection in these organs. Also doctors will use MRIsin order to take a closer look into the health of the reproductive organs in both men and women.
Bones and joints. MRIs are usually performed in conjunction with x-rays to look for bone and joint abnormalities such as arthritis, tendon and ligament damage or infection and bone marrow tumors.
