Your life can be completely different after giving birth. As true as it may be that most changes are for the better, some things change in a completely different direction and accepting or getting used to the new situations can be quite difficult or frustrating. In most cases, the new mother's needs take a back seat, as taking care of the baby and adjusting to a new lifestyle come first.

Putting on weight during the nine months of pregnancy is something normal and not many women can accept the fact that their body may never get into the pre-pregnancy shape unless there are willing to put some effort into it.

The first thing that you, as a new mother, should do to get into shape again is to give your body enough time to recover and not expect spectacular result over night. Losing weight and regaining your pre-pregnancy size virtually over night, like you see many celebrity mothers doing, is an unrealistic expectation for an ordinary woman who does not have her own dietitian, fitness trainer and experienced medical personnel to look after the newborn most of the time. You have to do all the feeding, diaper changing, ...
... strolling, etc. on your own or maybe with some little help from your family. It's only understandable why you don't have enough time to take care of yourself, especially during the first few months with your baby, when you'll probably spend all the free time you have taking naps or preparing bottles.

Paying attention to your diet is very important after giving birth, especially if you are breastfeeding. You have to provide your newborn with a healthy and balanced diet, and starving in order to lose weight is definitely not an option now. What you can do is cut out fat completely and cut down on sweets, sugar, salt, carbohydrates, and so on. Eat more fresh fruit and vegetable, but make sure to talk to your doctor first if you are breastfeeding, because there are several foods that are not recommended during this period.

Saving the best for last, the best thing you can do for your body in order to get back into your pre-pregnancy shape is to exercise. Of course, you should not overdo it. Before doing any physical exercise, you should have your doctor's approval. It is impossible to get back into shape if you lead a sedentary life and rely solely on diet in order to lose weight. Exercising can be very effective when trying to lose weight after giving birth, provided you do it right. Joining a mothers' fitness group is one of the best options you have for number of reasons. It gives you the opportunity to exercise with fitness experts according to a fixed and well-organized schedule, it increases your determination and self-confidence as part of group of new mothers trying to lose weight, and most importantly, it allows you to keep your baby close by while exercising and to engage in some fun, yet very effective activities that can help you lose weight.
