EVA Air is interesting because it is mainly a privately owned airline. This airline is unique because of their performance record as well as the number of investors willing to put money into the company. After only a couple of years in business, they were able to raise the funds necessary to get long haul aircraft to use for business. With flights to and from Taiwan, most of Asia, and even Europe, EVA is well-known in the travel industry. They have been flying internationally since the first half of the 1990s in addition to expanding into cargo hauling. To learn more about EVA and their history, continue reading through the next couple paragraphs.

Their initial license for running their business was granted in March of 89. Later that year, in October, they contracted for delivery of twenty six airliners from McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. Evergreen Airways was the original name of EVA but for undisclosed reasons it was changed to its current version. Evergreen International was actually the name of another airline that specialized as a cargo carrier. In an effort to avoid any possible confusion with a competitor, the ...
... name was permanently altered. This small sideline and deviation was quickly rectified and they started business from that point on.

During the 1990s, in a bold maneuver, EVA tried to take over the internal market for air passengers inside Taiwan. Three other airlines were purchased by EVA as a way to take over the market. The three airlines that were involved were Makung International Airlines, Great China Airlines, as well as Taiwan Airways. During the 1998s, UNI Air became an entity that included the three airlines merged into one. After EVA incorporated UNI Air into its business operations, it greatly increased the companies hold on the domestic traffic. All of the flight operations that take place in the whole country are provided by UNI Air.

When fuel prices increased more than 35% in 2007, the airline industry, including EVA, suffered a monetary crisis. Every airline is affected by higher fuel costs, and some even go out of business, but EVA survived despite heavy losses. Second quarter profit losses in the following year, 2008, were also reported as the situation was ongoing with rising fuel prices. When times are bad companies such as airlines, go into survival mode, where making money is not as important as not losing any. To keep their company alive, EVA had to change the schedule of flights, and reduce staffs, in order to cut enough costs to remain in business.

Though based in Asia, EVA Air is always seeking to maintain and grow their international presence. European and American travelers can enjoy the economy and business accommodations provided by this international airline. There were no profits, and great losses, less than a decade ago for EVA because of exponentially high fuel costs that were crippling everyone. By implementing several cost-cutting ideas, they were able to pull out of their economic woes by making wise decisions. Our dependence upon fossil fuels made it very difficult for any airline to survive during these times. From its humble beginnings, and its small size, this airline grew into a large international airline which is very commendable.
