We are all too familiar with the role of a personal visit to our family doctor, or to the clinic of a consulting physician, or that of a surgeon at the hospital operating theatre. Our objective is to obtain a diagnosis of our illness and then follow through with the prescribed curative measures. But with the telephone and now the net, there are doctors as well as other health professionals who do conduct online examinations through a series of health related medical question and answer sessions. These are quite different from those FAQ (frequently asked question) format which are mostly used to garner general opinion or information for a specific purpose or research. We will focus here on the online health related interview to arrive at an online diagnosis so as to provide an online prescription to enable you to get your online medication. The interviewer need not be the doctor himself, and it could be the pharmacist too, who are legally allowed to interact and advise on medications for the ‘routine’ illness.

The legitimate online pharmacies do have a panel of consulting physicians, besides ...
... the full-time in-house pharmacists. If the online pharmacy is registered too, there is every possibility that the medical practitioners and the pharmacists are adequately qualified. The questions that arise are not pertaining to the competency of the diagnosis, but in the method itself where the concerned patient is not physically present. Most of this disgruntle is raised by the on land pharmacies, which view this trend as a huge loss impact on their business and for a very good reason. It is a fact. The Pharmacy Guild and the Medical Association see this trend as having dangerous consequences, though none confirm whether the risk pertains to healthcare, to business, or to both.

In fact, many governments are considering making it legal for pharmacists to diagnose and prescribe medicines as they have the requisite knowledge of the physiology and the pharmacopeias of medications. With the online panel of physicians and pharmacists, this would be an added booster to online pharmacies. The doctors however argue that it is one thing to diagnose and prescribe, and totally a different ball-game when it comes to repeat monitoring and tending in an effort to ensure better results in lesser time so as to cut the curative costs. They also argue that a pharmacist is not technically qualified to diagnose or treat chronic illness such as heart conditions, or diabetes and asthma. And in a situation where an operation may become necessary, they do not see a surgeon willing to operate on the advice of a pharmacist.

The reason of delving into the pros and the cons of the argument, as well as the need for established doctors and pharmacists on the online pharmacy’s panel is to make you understand where to go for that consultation, and where to draw the line. We do agree that for the routine illness, which at most times requires dispensing OTC (over the counter) medication, or where the fees of a doctor is beyond means, the pharmacists advice more than suffices the purpose.
