Water-based And Oil-based Pomades

Water-based and Oil-based Pomades
Pomades originated in the 19th century and were made from animal fat. It was used to create the slicked back look that was popular in the early 1920s. In the 1950s many men used pomades to create the pompadour, and during this time the pomades usually created a quite greasy look. Pomades have been popular on and off throughout the last century, and many companies have strived to develop a more environmentally friendly solution than animal fat. Today’s pomades are either oil- or water-based.
Pomades work by coating the hair, and the hair has a shiny, wet look the entire time the pomade is in the hair. Most pomade today is made of petroleum jelly, essential oils and wax-or a combination of these ingredients. The more was that is in the pomade, the stronger the hold. Whereas if there is more oil or water in the pomade, the hairstyle looks wetter, but without the stiffness of the wax pomade. Pomade is still used by many men, and even women, to create elaborate hairstyles.
People who wear pomades often want spiky hair, including mohawks and faux hawks. A Mohawk is a mane of ...
... vertical hair down the middle of the hair, with the hair shaved off the sides. A faux hawk has longer hair in the middle that is spiked, but the hair on the sides is not shaven. Other popular styles include the liberty spikes, porcupine spikes, pompadours and the quiff. For these styles the best pomade would be a wax-based pomade, which would provide stiffness and support throughout the day. For a slicked back look, oil- or water- based pomade would be better.
A benefit of water-based pomades is that they wash out quite easily, and wearers report that their hair is left with no residue. Traditionally, oil based pomades and wax pomades leave a residue and need to be washed out a few times to get rid of the product. For example, if you’re going to a concert and want to wear an epic faux hawk, but have to go to your job at the bank the next morning-a water based pomade would be best for that occasion.
