Sit In Showers : Bathing Safety For Your Loved Ones
If you're caring for a senior citizen or someone who's physically challenged, personal hygiene issues can be both distressing and embarrassing. Safety and well-being are another major problem with this section of the population, and care-givers and those responsible for them would be anxious and concerned for them each time they take a shower or a bath. However, privacy and dignity are important to all of us and if these are compromised, many elderly and physically challenged people would prefer not taking regular baths or showers altogether rather than ask for help.
The health benefits of regular steam and massage, hydrotherapy, soothing and calming effects of regular baths, showers and cleansing are undeniable. A relaxing shower also provides restful and better sleep which is often an issue with the elderly. Those suffering from pain, arthritis, diabetic neuropathy or other conditions would benefit greatly from regular warm showers. However, many elderly and physically challenged people are anxious about slipping and falling, injuring themselves or breaking bones, or may have had bad experiences with turning on taps ...
... that suddenly gush with scalding or freezing water.
One way of tackling these issues is to make it easier and more convenient for them to experience the feeling of being clean, fresh and relaxed after a shower. Some of us may have experimented with installing a shower chair or stool placed in the shower. However, these could pose a risk if they're not stable or properly fixed to the floor. Metal chairs may rust while plastic ones may crack or warp. Hence, the best solution would be to have a sit in shower.
This shower design comprises a comfortable platform built up against the wall with easy access to grab rails, shelves for bath accessories and taps/knobs etc in the shower unit. The floor is completely slip proof and the unit can either be enclosed like a conventional shower stall, or it can be combined with a sit down bath, sealed with a door lined by a water-proof gasket.
The bench can extend to the limit of the shower stall, making it safe and comfortable to transfer in and out of the shower stall. The sit down shower unit can be a practical and safe solution to tackling these issues among elderly or physically challenged people. Additional features like longer hoses for accessing hard-to-reach parts like feet or back, intelligent placement of shelving, easy to turn larger knobs, faucets and taps, pre-determined heating settings, textured floor and seat, etc would make the unit completely safe and easy to use.
Even if you're neither elderly nor physically challenged, a sit in shower is still a luxury that you can indulge yourself with!
