Did You Get Deferred To Your #1 Choice College

Harvard's Admission blog recently featured an article (here ) about getting a deferral in the college admissions process. I agree with him that this is the most unsettling decision you can possibly get because it is not a definitive answer at the time frame that you had hoped. You were hoping for a “YES” from them and would have been disappointed with a “no” but with that, you would have had to move on right away and go to plan B.
A deferral is a maybe, they are not giving you a definitive answer now and that can be worse than getting a no because it just drags it out. At least with a rejection, you have an answer and can start to come to terms with it.
What this means is that you will be put into the regular decision pool, if you applied Early Decision, and will be judged will the other regular decision applicants. You will get answer from the school by April 1 saying whether you have been accepted or rejected. My best college admissions advice is to keep getting good grades and continue to participate in all school activities as you had been doing. Do not get senioritis!
If you are a regular ...
... decision candidate from the start (meaning you applied by the regular decision deadline by January 1st or 15th and didn't tick the Early Action or Early Decision box) and you get a deferral or waitlisted status by April 1st then that means that they will wait to see who sends in their deposits. If accepted students do not send in their deposits by the May 1st deadline then schools will start taking people off of the waitlist.
However, you must send in your deposit to a school where you have been accepted by the May 1st deadline and sometimes you will still be on the other school's waitlist. What do you do?
Sometimes students will send in their deposit to the accepted college and then get the process for matriculation going only to then be accepted off of the waitlist of that other school. They might then send in another deposit and forgo the deposit at the first school in order to attend that school that had them on the waitlist. College admissions officers frown on applicants sending in multiple deposits but I can't say that it doesn't happen.
My advice is to look at and research all of the schools that accepted you and send in your deposit by May 1st to the school that best fits your needs. Do not let the waitlisted college toy with your emotions. If someone didn't invite me to their party right off the bat then I wouldn't want to go once they see who else is coming to the party.
There's a lot more involved in preparing to get admission in the college of your choiced and getting accepted in the college of your choice.
