Dealing With The Threat Of Theft

One of the purposes of a home insurance policy is to protect you against any losses you may suffer due to theft. Accordingly, if you can reduce the risk to which your property is exposed, the cheaper your premiums will be so any steps that you can take to make your property safer will save you money.
The vast percentage of burglaries are committed by the burglar going through a window. You should make sure that any accessible window is secure and is fitted with an internal door lock that meets the insurance industry standard. Do not leave any windows unlocked or open when you leave the house, even if you think it is out of reach.
Outside doors are another target for buglars and they should all be fitted with locks to the insurance company's standards. Beware of nearby glass panels that someone could break in order to open a lock, and all your doors should have the type of lock that can only be opened with a key and not by someone using a plastic card. You may save money on your insurance premium by installing additional bolts to the insides of your doors.
Changing your locks can save you a surprising amount ...
... of money, but make sure that you check with the insurance company for the correct type of lock.
Whilst the strength and quality of the lock is important, a door is only as strong as the frame that holds it. Make sure that your frames are in good condition and if they need replacing make sure that you do to at once, it could save you money. A weak frame means that your house is potentially at a lot of risk.
Alarm systems can also save you money. Most insurance companies will want you to use a company registered with the National Approval Council for Security Systems and if you are struggling to find a company with this accreditation they will be able to point you in the right direction. It's important to remember that having an alarm may act as a deterrent if it is visible, but it will only help tell you that someone has broken in, and it's best to try to ensure that no one breaks in at all.
If you are going away on holiday, don't make it obvious. Whilst this won't save on your insurance premium, it may reduce the risk of suffering a break in. If you have milk or newspapers delivered make sure that they're cancelled, and if you have a timer switch it can give the appearance that you are at home and the presence of light in a house will often deter a burglar.
Home insurance policies do not have to be expensive, and if you do your research even in the current climate you can get some very good deals. Co-Operative Insurance is a good place to look at the moment.
