Even though factors such as brand, appearance, or nicotine content are playing an important part in selecting a fine cigar, for most smokers, flavor is the single most important measure during the selection process. Whether they bought their stogie in a cigar bar in Frisco, in a Dallas cigar shop, or a Cigar Store in Plano, they feel like they are entitled to a certain quality of flavor, especially if the cigar was pricey. Oddly and interestingly enough, price is not always a good indicator of quality, and it is certainly not a good indicator of how much someone will that certain brand. Personal preference will always come to the picture, and buying a pricey cigar just because everybody says it's great, is probably not the greatest idea.

The main thing is, perceptions can be affected by the price, because if someone pays a high amount for a single cigar, they will have a very high-expectation towards it, a high expectation that might turn into self-hatred, because at the end of the day, the verdict will come from one's taste buds, and those little guys are usually making a quick decision. It is important to be able to ...
... tell a pricey, and a good cigar apart. How? Well, first, one must realize that the two is not always mutually exclusive. A pricey cigar is not always a great, or even good cigar. Often, the buyer not necessarily pays for the quality, in fact, sometimes the reasons why a price is higher, has actually nothing to do with the quality of the cigar. The buyer instead pays more because of higher promotion prices, higher government taxes, or simply because of stricter regulations. You want to buy cigars in Dallas? You better check where it came from.

How exactly one chooses the right one then? Well, the key thing is research, and as in with everything in life, some luck won't hurt either. As above stated, the most important thing when someone buys a stogie is to know its origins, where it came from. This is important, because even if it won't be a hit, at least you'll know which area you don't want to choose from the next time. A cigar from a bar in Frisco might have the same quality as a decade old special selection from Cuba. You just never know.

One thing is for sure, where the cigar was made, will give it unique characteristics. It doesn't really matter where someone buys it, again, you can sit in a cigar lounge in Dallas, the main thing is the origin of the tobacco. The most common and widely known cigar making places are Dominican Republic, Honduras, Brazil, Jamaica, USA, Nicaragua, and of course, Cuba. Each of those places produces, or produced some cigars that are, or were considered first class. What makes those cigars different, is essentially the soil, where, and how the tobacco has grown before it was harvested. The warm climate of those countries is ideal for the procedure, and obviously, having experts from multi-generation tobacco growing families, also doesn't hurt. Another important characteristic is strength. The problem with the relation between strength and cigars, is that almost no cigar will have any information on its label regarding its strength. So the buyer will almost always have to rely on the sales person regarding this information.
