Hot tapping is also known to be wet tapping. It is an easy way to tap the water line while the line remains under pressure. In the existing line an additional line is added to drain the system or add it to the thermo-well or the sensor. Several tapping machines have adapters in them that have a bleed valve which allows the pressure to be tested with a hydrostatic pump and to ensure that the tapping saddle or the sleeve has a good fit in it and it does not leak any further.

How a Hot Tap functions?

The functioning of a hot tap is done by placing the saddle or the tapping sleeve on top of the line and to add a valve (ball valve, gate valve, corp stop). Then the saddle is tested for the purpose of fitting and it is pressure tested with a hydrostatic pump and it goes through the bleed valve that is present on the adapter.

The wall tapping machine has a packing gland which then seals the valve. Then you have to tap the pipe by using the hot tap machine, so as to lower the tap cutter and the pilot by holding the retention wires down through the valve and ...
... then hold it to cut the metal or the plastic coupon. When it is done with the help of the tap, then it has to be retracted into the assembly line and placed inside the machine and then the valve has to be closed.

When the task of the tap is completed then you must retract the assembly till the machine and then close the valve tightly. By doing this your job will be completed and it will be ready for draining and adding a line into it.

A plumber can further expand the business by adding the hot tap services. With the addition of inexpensive portable machine, the task will be done through a ¾” through 2.00” taps that are present on any kind of pipe. This process further allows for the reduction of the draining system and to further avoid any kind of expensive shutdowns while adding up an extra line or the point of drain while the line still remains hot. This can be a very viable investment for the small commercial plumber to add any extra jobs in the strip malls, large hotels, and with better facilities.

How do I know what tapping sleeve is required for the job?

To know which kind of tapping sleeve must be used is a difficult process. If you do not know which product to buy, you must always consult with an expert and get the best product for the application.

There are several kinds of hot tap saddles, service saddles and even the tapping sleeves that are available from the basic ductile iron bodies that is present in the stainless steel design.
