Events have been around forever. It is a ubiquitous word in an Indian modern society. Today, the concept of events includes a large variety of social gatherings, meetings, sports, shows, weddings, promotional activities and performances. It has become a fashion to use the word ‘event’ for everything that is happening. In recent years, the number of events has grown rapidly and an industry around events has evolved.

These events have created a lot of opportunities for students and professionals who want to earn extra income. One of the most benefit group in this sections is the event hostesses or event promoters. These event hostesses may work in a wide variety of places that include, but are not limited to, conferences, exhibitions, weddings, award ceremony, malls and restaurants.

These event hostesses/promoters may be employed directly by a company on a temporary basis, or as needed to represent the company when it is holding an events. Sometimes they act as usher and a general representative during the event, serving as someone who can relate to the guests. Sometimes they are at the reception desk to register ...
... the number of guests coming and to handover any kits or goodies or queries from the guests. Attractive event hostesses are seen standing next to a new vehicle and help in the unveiling of the vehicle by welcoming various invitees and potential customers. They also act in the capacity of a master of ceremony for an event and host the event generally to create a welcoming environment for invited guests.

Their responsibilities also extend to jobs where they work in weddings or during a conference by helping the guests find their tables. They may also be hired to work as hostesses during an art exhibition or during any other defined occasion. The position is not one that requires an extensive educational background in terms of qualifications, though the exact criteria for such work may be determined by the requirement of the person or company hiring the individual. One commonality that such people can expect is to work odd hours that may last well into the early morning, depending on the event.

In New Delhi, the event hostesses are mostly girls who work on a temporary basis, they might be students or professionals. Through their networking they are informed about an event and their requirement. They are then approached by any event manpower outsourcing organizations or through some coordinator. The process of selection is mainly through photographs and depends on the requirement of the clients it can even be an interview or a telephonic interview.

These hostesses are paid from Rs 700 to Rs 7000 per day or more depending on the occasions and the type of work they are getting. Some hostesses work only during the weekends, some only during the day while there are a lot of them who works only at night. Their main motive is to earn either to support their family, themselves or for extra pocket-money to shops.

Reema Verma, a dietician by profession and a part-time event hostess said” Before putting my foot as an event hostess, I was working in two clinics. My work started from morning 8 to evening 9 combining both the clinics, so my schedule was very tight. Due to some issues I couldn’t continue my day shift work and the flow of my income reduced drastically. Therefore I began working as an event hostess during the day. It’s difficult for me to work in all kinds of events and chose to work only for exhibition, conferences, award functions and trade fairs. Right now I’m eying for Auto expo which will start from 6th of Feb, 2013. It could be my last event because I’m resuming my work after the expo”.

Rupali, from Assam, a BCA 1st year student, “My point of doing events is simply to earn for shopping. Like any other girls, I love shopping! For that I cannot ask my parents all the time. And shopping with my own hard-earned money is a different experience. Its winter vacation so I’m doing events almost every day. ”

“It is not just money for me. I’m getting exposure and it’s a very good opportunity for me to strengthen my networking. Since I’m a mass communication student, I would like to specialize in event management and by the time I graduate, I’ll be able to land myself a good job or start my own event company”, as quoted by Priya, a Mass communication student.

According to Sakshi, “working as an event hostess has boosted my confidence and I am more extrovert today as compared to 3 years before. I’ve learn how to observe people and their tricks. These skills help you in negotiation; otherwise coordinators who hire you will enjoy your money while you work hard and get only a penny.”

“An event hostess needs to be very careful especially during late night events. With the recent scenario in Delhi, it is not safe for girls to take for granted.” as told by Bhumika, a Public Relations Executive and a part-time event hostess.
