Taking charge of your home’s interior design does not have to be scary. Anyone can learn the basics of interior design and make drastic improvements without spending a fortune to get it done. We recommend looking through magazines to get your inspiration and ideas. That is the best way to start creating your dream room. Cut out the room scenes that you like and keep them organized.

Now it is time to get started. Pick the room scene you want to replicate. Look closely at all the different design elements in the room. You will need to source each of the items that you want to replicate. Be realistic, this room made it into a magazine and many of the items were either custom made or sourced from very expensive designer showrooms. You won’t need to do that.

Start with the paint. Take the photo to your local paint store. Match the color with the many paint swatches. You should be able to get help from a store associate. Don’t do this on a Saturday, paints stores are very busy and you won’t get much help. Go during the week when they are likely to be slower.

The flooring is next. This can be a small project ...
... or a very large one. If you already have hardwood floors and all you need is an area rug, then this is considered a small project. If you are doing new wall-to-wall carpet or installing new hardwood, then you need to visit a flooring store. They are the experts and will make sure you get the right product to match your room design. Area rugs can be purchased in a store or on-line. We recommend shopping on-line for price and selection. You will see every possible design and size unlike a store that will have limited selection.

Now it is time to work with the window treatments. We recommend that you do this on-line as well. You will get the best choice of fabrics, styles and pricing. I can be hard to describe what you are looking for on the phone or a live chat. Call the company and get an email of a design person. Scan your photo image and email it to them. Tell them you want the style and fabric shown in the photo. They should be able to match or come very close to the window treatment style and fabric pattern. Remember, it doesn’t have to be exact.

Furniture is the next focus. You won’t be able to find the exact match for each piece. We recommend you do a search on the internet. You will have to be good at describing the item to return the best result. Repeat the search using an image search. You can order furniture on-line, but we always recommend speaking with someone on the phone before you pull the trigger. If you don’t get helpful service during the buying process, don’t buy from them. It will only get worse if there is a problem.

Lastly, there are going to be small accent pieces in the room. Home Good is an excellent resource for accents. There are also hundreds of website that offer accents as well.

Get your pricing organized and make sure everything is within your budget. Then order everything at once. Do not start the room renovation until everything arrives at your home. It is much less stressful to work that way. You don’t want to be in the middle of your makeover and find out the couch you love is on a 12 week back-order.
