Taking a shower or bath can be one of the most risky and dangerous activities for the elderly. Slipping on wet and soapy floors, hitting the head against taps or the wall or fracturing a limb, tearing a ligament or even simple bruises and contusions can be intensely painful and may even cause irreversible damage. Traditional shower cubicles also mean getting in and out with wet feet which is another potential hazard.

However, most of us prefer to remain independent and self-sufficient, even when we have certain limitations of age or have a disability. Bathing is one area where we want to preserve our dignity and privacy, although this is an activity that can be extremely dangerous if we're living alone. Keeping the shower or bath clean and dry can be challenging if we don't have some assistance.

For mobility-challenged people, senior citizens and the infirm, a sit in shower is the perfect solution. The walk in or sit in shower is a compact unit which allows the person to sit down inside first, then swing their legs in before closing the door and starting the shower. This is a much safer way to move for someone ...
... who is elderly or mobility challenged and does not require assistance from a care-giver or nurse. They don't have to lift their feet or stand for long inside the shower. The door to the sit in shower is designed to avoid bending or twisting of the body to open/close it.

Extra fittings like thermostatic taps ensure that you don't accidentally scald yourself or turn on freezing cold water. The sit in shower can also be converted to a conventional bath if required as it can be filled up like a tub. The water-tight door seals shut and prevents water from leaking out. This is the perfect solution for the times when you want a relaxing soak, but you're afraid to get in and out of a conventional bath tub.

A sit down shower can be fitted with a shower curtain or glass panel depending on your taste. Keeping the small sit in shower cabinet clean is also much easier because of the smaller dimensions. This is also the perfect option for smaller bathrooms, as it takes up very little space. Many sit in showers are designed to be wheelchair friendly. The height of the seat is the same as most wheelchairs and the option of sliding/outward opening doors which open completely is also available.

Younger people can also enjoy the Japanese style sit in shower experience. If you're thinking long-term, a sit in shower is the ideal bathroom accessory that anticipates the potential problems which arise as you get older.
