Tension, stress and anxiety – these words are synonymous with today’s new age lifestyles. In the desire to finish first in the rat race called life, many of us lose our mental peace and physical wellbeing in the process. We lose our ability to enjoy simple pleasures of life and instead become overwhelmed by the pressures of daily living.

The scale tips over, when we are no longer able to carry out our normal functions effectively due to excessive mental stress in our lives. Herein, we reach a point where it becomes imperative to seek assistance for mental tension relief.

Defining mental tension

Mental tension or stress is the common parlance that is symptomatic of people suffering from high anxiety. This anxiety can stem from personal or professional issues or circumstances and if unchecked can escalate into frequent panic attacks. Other manifestations of mental tension can be in the form of phobias or obsessive compulsive disorders.

Some of the symptoms of tension are:-

• Digestive problems
• Sleeplessness, restlessness
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Heart ...
... palpitations
• Nausea
• Irritability

There are many ways to cure mental tension, primarily through various medications available in the market, as per the advice of your doctor. However, these do not attack the problem from the grassroots level. Hence, the cure can only be temporary or it may treat only the symptoms and not the disorder itself.

Today, increasing numbers of patients are opting for natural remedy for tension relief and the most effective among them is the Ayurvedic treatment.

Ayurveda’s natural remedy for tension

Ayurveda is an age old Indian medical healing methodology practiced by the ancient sages. It follows a holistic approach to cure ailments and is also called the Science of Life. Ayurveda is the science of understanding the constitution of all things and learning to live in harmony with each other and with nature.

As per Ayurveda a person’s body constitution comprises of three humors called Vata, Pitta and Kapha, seven tissues known as Rasa, Mansa, Rakta, Asthi, Meda, Majja and Shukra and three body excretions namely urine, sweat and faeces. A lack of union in any of these constituents can give rise to a number of ailments.

In Ayurvedic treatment, the patient is reviewed in totality by an Ayurvedic practitioner. Based on the temperamental and physiological needs of the person, the treatment is advised. For mental tension relief, a multi pronged approach is taken up in Ayurveda.

Mental tension is primarily a Vata dosha ailment (one which affects the brain, mind and sensory perception). As a natural remedy for tension, there are several herbal treatments which are useful to reduce mental stress. Ashwagandha, ginseng, brahmi, licorice, nettle and chamomile are some of the herbs used to treat tension.

A regulated diet which is rich in fruits, vegetables and low on fried, high calorie foods is recommended. This ‘satvic’ diet helps to purify the body of toxicity and improve overall body functioning leading to a clear, calm and focused mind and rejuvenated body. Panchakarma or five therapeutic measures is highly recommended under Ayurveda. Under this form of treatment several body purification methods are implemented. This cleansing treatment is considered essential before starting the actual treatment as it helps to regain the natural balance in the body and improve one’s mental and emotional state. Finally yoga techniques, meditation and Pranayama are also incorporated in the Ayurveda treatment to provide the ultimate mental tension relief.
