Dealing With Common Foot Pain

While our feet are a fairly small part of our bodies, they take a lot of abuse during the day. Many people spend more than 12 hours on their feet every day, and if they have any sort of foot pain, those hours can seem like forever. Overall, more than 75% of people around the world will have to deal with foot pain at some point. Foot pain can lead to more than just discomfortâ€if not dealt with correctly you may end up injuring your foot to the point that the damage is permanent.
Foot pain can be caused by many different things. Simply standing too long can put all sorts of pressure on your feet. After standing for many hours, the muscles in your legs and feet get overworked. Because you don’t move your legs or feet that much while standing, blood actually tends to pool in the lower legs instead of being circulated back up into the body. This leads to aching legs and feet.
Another issue is footwear. Wearing shoes that don’t fit well or wearing high heels can cause a number of foot issues. High heels put more pressure on the balls of the foot and on the toes instead ...
... of the wide bottom of the foot, which causes pain in these regions. High heels can also cause problems with circulation and blood flow, leading to aching legs.
There are some causes of foot pain that we can’t really control. As we get older, the accumulated wear and tear on our feet, as with most of our body, starts to catch up with us. Arthritis may develop in the foot, causing pain when walking. Being overweight can also put additional stress on our feet. Other diseases like diabetes or poor circulation can result in foot pain.
What can you do to reduce foot pain? Well, the most common solution is to try to cut down on the number of hours you spend on your feet. With rest, most foot pain goes away in a few days to a week. You can also take anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce any swelling in your feet. Of course, this doesn’t get rid of the source of the foot pain. For that, you need to look at what you were doing before your feet started hurting. If you have poor circulation or are overweight, exercise may help. In addition to helping you lose a few pounds and improving the blood flow to your feet, you will help make your body more healthy overall.
You may need to get new shoes or purchase orthopedic insoles for your shoes that help provide the support your feet need. It is important to make certain that you also wear the right kinds of shoes for the right activities. Dress shoes are not designed for a lot of walking or for running. Likewise, there are specific orthopedic insoles for different tasks. If you’re a runner, you want to be sure you get the insoles designed for high impact, not the ones designed to be worn by those who do a lot of standing.
