Eating Healthy Snacks
We’ve all heard that we need to eat only healthy snacks, but how many people really avoid that tasty chocolate cake or bowl of ice cream? While we all cheat on the healthy snack rule from time to time, there is a reason we’re told to snack on fruits and other healthy items instead of junk food (although the occasional candy bar is OK every now and then). While the main reason, of course, is that these foods are better for us, there are other reasons why kids and adults alike need to snack better.
Health reasons are the first. Our bodies don’t need all the sugar and other junk found in candy. We do, however, need the many vitamins and nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, and other healthy snacks. In fact, we often don’t get enough of these nutrients. Snacking on items that don’t contain sugar also benefits our teeth since they won’t be subject to as much plaque.
Eating these healthy snacks will also help you lose weight. If you want to lose some pounds, or if you have children who are a bit on the obese ...
... side (and many children are these days), eating fruits and vegetables will only help your diet plan.
However, eating a healthy snack is also a good way of practicing discipline. You may want the candy bar, but if you reach instead of an apple or an orange, you’re showing just how much control you have over yourself and your cravings. This discipline can then spill over into other areas of your life. Teaching your kids to discipline themselves in this way can result in better study habits, for example.
Studies have also shown that eating foods high in fat and sugar can actually cause our brains and our bodies to work at less than peak efficiency. By cutting down on the sugar and fat, we can actually help our brains work better, which results in more efficient thought and work.
By choosing to eat healthy snacks instead of candy and other sweats, we can also teach our children how to look at the long-term effects of health. They’re not going to immediately see a differenceâ€just because they spend one day eating celery and raisins instead of candy doesn’t mean they’re instantly going to be thin or feel differently. However, in a month, they will see changes. In two months, they’ll see even more positive effects.
Finally, eating healthy snacks is very important if your family has a history of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. While studies are not conclusive, they do point out that watching how much sugar you eat can certainly help prevent type 2 diabetes or at least control it. One of the most important things anyone with type 2 diabetes can do is reduce the amount of sugar they eat. If you’re predisposed to type 2 diabetes, it’s important to watch how much sugar you eat. Eating a healthy snack, then, may not just be good for you - it may actually help prevent health issues later on in life.
