Leather is made out of variety of animal hide such as buffalo, cow, goat, calf, etc and even hides from exotic animals. The animal hide is tanned using several different process to transform the skins and hides into different types of leather. The finished product is then used as a raw material for producing a vast variety of goods ranging from jackets, bags, shoes, furniture, musical instruments, stationary items, automobiles and a lot of other products. Tanneries around the world use different processes to treat the hides and then they sell it to manufacturers in various forms. If you want to buy leather online as a raw material, then you can contact tanneries with a trusted online presence to cater to your requirements.

Different Types of Tanned Leather

Though different animal hides are used for making leather, it is the tanning processes that set them apart in their own category. Different tanning processes are used mainly to accommodate needs of different manufacturers. For example not all types of goat leather are suitable for making shoes or jackets. It has to be tanned and treated in a ...
... certain way so as to make it suitable enough for creating a shoe or jacket. Some of the different types of tanned leather that tanneries offer are vegetable tanned, Aldehyde tanned, chrome tanned, brain tanned, rose tanned, chamois, alum tawed and synthetic tanned. The tanning processes make a significant difference to the final product thus allowing them for different uses and applications.

4 Common Forms of Leather

You can buy leather online basically in four forms. These are full grain, top grain, corrected grain and split leather. Hides that have not been buffed or sanded to remove imperfections are referred to as full grain. High quality footwear and furniture manufacturers use this type of product as it is strong, durable and over a period of time develops a patina. Top grain is the second highest quality product which is used for manufacturing high end products. It is thinner and has better pliability. Hides that are covered with artificial grain on the surface to hide imperfections refer to corrected grain leather. Split leather is produced from the fibrous remains of the hide after the top grain is removed. It is used for creating suede.

Leather Finish Types

Just like how leather is available in different varieties categorized by the cattle type, tanning process and forms, it also comes in three finishes. You can purchase goat leather in three types of finishes and they are aniline, semi-aniline and pigmented. The finish determines the appearance of the final hide. Top grain form is available in aniline and semi-aniline finish. Aniline finish has a natural appearance and is less resistant to soiling and semi-aniline finish has a light surface coating. Pigmented finish uses a polymer coating and is less natural in appearance. The type of finish you choose depends on what you want to use it for and the appearance you want.
