Thanksgiving is fast approaching and as early as now, people have started planning on what to cook for that special day. I have the fondest memories of Thanksgiving. It is, after all, the only holiday that manages to reunite my entire family once every twelve months. We would gather at our family home and spend the entire day trading stories over good food. Oh how I love it when they'd start carving the turkey! Through the years, my mom has managed to develop recipes of her own that make me miss home-cooked meals whenever I'd go back to the city.
One such thing she has perfected has been her choices of marinade. Whether it's an easy pork marinade or the best marinade for chicken, name it and she has experimented with its recipe. The Thanksgiving turkey, for instance, would be rubbed with a special sauce made out of the finest herbs from her garden and some cracked pepper marinade from Barhyte Specialty Foods. The latter is something she discovered off the internet, which was perfect because the store took online orders. Now she's hooked! She has been testing their products, one after the other, with her recipes in preparation ...
... for her Thanksgiving menu. Now who's to say I'm not excited for Thanksgiving, huh? This is one major food trip waiting to happen.
Anyhow, one must remember that aside from the good food and great company, Thanksgiving is all about expressing gratitude for all the great things that has happened in the previous year. It is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. For some, Thanksgiving is a particularly American holiday. The word evokes images of football, family reunions, roasted turkey with stuffing and pumpkin pie. People celebrate it with gusto because they're happy to have been given a new year to be thankful for. If you're thinking of hosting a Thanksgiving meal yourself, here are some of the important things to remember:
1. It pays to plan ahead. You don't want to cram at the last minute which may lead you to not enjoying the festivities with your loved ones.
2. Make your guest list and have them R.S.V.P. at least two weeks before Thanksgiving so that you can plan your menu accordingly. You don't want to cook for a battalion when less than ten people are going.
3. Decide if it's going to be a sit-down or buffet-style meal.
4. Aside from the seating capacity, confirm if you have a place to display all food dishes.
5. Once you have the final headcount, determine the recipes for your menu.
For those undecided on what to prepare, I remembered that a friend once shared her Thanksgiving menu list. Pretty basic stuff, if you can call it. One should have:

• Turkey
• Gravy
• Mashed Potatoes
• Sweet Potatoes
• Stuffing
• Cranberries
• Green Beans
• Dinner Rolls
• Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Sweet Potato Pie
• Coffee
• Various Coffee Creamers
• Wine, Punch, Apple Cider

Are you stoked enough for Thanksgiving? I'm counting the days leading up to the big day myself. Going back to my hometown is always something I look forward to because I get to escape the busy lure of the city life. In the end, all that matters is a heartfelt celebration with your loved ones. In this modern day and age, gathering together in grateful appreciation for a Thanksgiving celebration with friends and family is a deeply meaningful and comforting annual ritual to most Americans.
