Dynamos are also known as electrical generators. They are used as a means of generator that produces direct current with the use of a commutator. They were the first electrical generators that were capable of delivering power for industry. They also serve as basis to foundation upon which many other later electric-power conversion devices were based. This includes the electric motor, the alternating-current alternator, and the rotary converter.

The dynamo basically uses rotating coils of wire and magnetic fields to convert mechanical rotation into a pulsing direct electric current. It provides constant magnetic field and a set of rotating windings called the armature which turn within that field. It is used to convert rotational energy into electrical energy and also to generate electricity.

On small machines the constant magnetic field may be provided by one or more permanent magnets; larger machines have the constant magnetic field provided by one or more electromagnets, which are usually called field coils.

How is dynamo generated?

Basically, dynamo is generated by electric charge sparked by ...
... ignition. This is similar to an alternator. The sensor is placed on the fork of the rims and is charged by movement of the bike, it is used on short distance and 2-stroke bikes. Such bikes generally use high powered batteries because they run on very powerful engines. Dynamos are generally found on 50-125cc motorcycles.

Dynamos were invented with the prime purpose of replacing batteries. The commutator is basically a set of contacts mounted on the machine's shaft, which reverses the connection of the windings to the external circuit when the potential reverses. Hence, instead of alternating current, a pulsing direct current is produced. Earlier, dynamos were considered to cause a lot of noise. Moreover, the lights were not very bright. This holds true for older dynamos. However, they are not dim. These lights are more visible and slightly better at lighting up the road. They are also known to provide higher and steady currents.

They are also used in low power applications. More so, where low voltage DC is required since an alternator with a semiconductor rectifier proves to be inefficient. Besides, hand cranked dynamos are used in clockwork radios, lamps (LEDs), mobile phones and other human powered equipment to recharge batteries.
