Owning an RV or recreational vehicle is certainly a pleasant experience, but one that’s fraught with a lot of responsibilities. Here are some of the basic things that every RV owner ought to remember;

a) Keeping them protected from the vagaries of the weather: Ensure that the RV is covered when not in use. The vehicle’s tires are prone to damage from the sun’s rays and hence should be covered well. A good quality inflation pressure gauge can check the pressure in the tires, especially during the cold weather as they tend to become cold. RV covers are perhaps your best bet against harsh winters.

b) Keep the tank clean: This may not be the most desirable of jobs, but is certainly the most important one. There are two tanks on any average RV system; one to flush out water from the toilet and the other to flush out water from the sinks and showers. The later should be treated with chemicals so that the solids within break down and the entire RV remains odor free. Flushing the tanks whenever they are used helps them remain clean. During winters or when the RV is kept indoors ensure that you clean out the tanks ...
... lest they invite rodents, roaches and other insects.

c) Inspect regularly: The roof of most RVs are rubberized. They have to be checked periodically for damage caused by the sun or by low hanging branches of trees. When cleaning, use specific products made especially for rubber roofs; common cleaning products can affect the quality of the roof. During winters when the RV is kept indoors, mold and mildew can be a problem. Rather than using tarp and other similar products, make sure that you use a breathable material. Materials such as tarp can trap moisture inside the vehicle causing mold and mildew buildup. Mold and mildew deposit not only causes long lasting damage but also hurts its resale value.

d) Replace RV covers regularly or reproof it: RV covers have to be reproofed regularly so as to avoid leaks. Rains and snow can cause the cover to leak hence reproof it with a wax polish.

e) Undertake regular maintenance: Getting the RV inspected regularly helps to maintain its life. The engine compartment should be checked, the carburetor should be inspected for tightness, the bolts and screws should be checked for tightness, the oil should be changed and inspected for their levels. The battery should also be checked, a good electrolyte level should be maintained, and dust and other products should be changed.

f) Clean the RV regularly to remove dust, dirt and bugs. Natural cotton is much better than other materials as they do not make leave scratch marks.

Taking care of all these points ensures that your RV is clean and tidy and this ultimately pays you back through a good resale value.
