The use of ultraviolet light for sterilization has actually been in practice for over 100 years. The process works because the specific wavelengths of UV light are harmful to, and kill, microorganisms. It can be used for a variety of purposes. Today, Ultra Violet sterilizers are most commonly used for medical sterilization and water sanitation.

The first use of UV light as a disinfectant for water was in 1916. Initially, the process was extremely expensive and impractical when compared to other available options. More recently, the technology has become more efficient, and less expensive. Today, many states have developed standards under which UV sterilizers may be used to disinfect water.

The specific wavelengths that are known to be damaging to microorganisms are rarely naturally found on Earth. Though they are generated by the sun, they are blocked by the Earth's atmosphere. In order to generate UV light, specific lamps must be used. Generally, when disinfecting any specific environment, air is forced through to ensure the entire environment ...
... becomes subject to UV exposure.

UV sterilization is extremely effective. When proper procedures and protocols are followed, disinfectant rates can exceed 99 percent. Reaching this high level is dependent upon the time of exposure, the type of item being sterilized, and the number of times the item is exposed to UV light.

UV light must make contact with all surfaces of an object being sterilized. This can limit certain items to only the line of sight of the UV source. By using a highly reflective surface, such as aluminum, the effectiveness of UV lighting is greatly increased.

Now that Ultra Violet sterilizers are used for water disinfection, they are actually the preferred method of many companies. The equipment does not require much maintenance or specialized labor, reducing the long term cost. The only method of cleaning water that compares with UV sterilization, is boiling. In terms of energy effectiveness, UV sterilization is over 20,000 times more efficient. Using UV light to clean drinking water also leaves no taste, odor or chemical taint. It is even proficient at removing parasites from drinking water.

Water must still be filtered if used for drinking. UV light will not dissolve any foreign substances the water may carry. This includes both organic and inorganic mater. Basic filtration for particulates is inexpensive though and does not significantly add to the overall cost of cleaning the water for drinking.

Today, UV sterilization is used as an inexpensive way to treat everything from drinking water to waste and pond water. By using pond skimmers, UV tubes, and other cost effective equipment, clean water can be provided at low cost all over the world. There are several charitable organizations working to deliver UV sanitation equipment to the developing world where drinking water is scarce.
