Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the primary cause of death among infants who are 1 month to 1 year old, claiming about 2,500 infants each year in the United States.
What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS ?
SIDS happens while sleeping, without warning, to infants who appear healthy . It is the most terrifying, bewildering and upsetting thing that may happen with a newborn baby. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as when a baby dies in the first year of life from no clear reason. The reasons still are not wholly identified, but in SIDS deaths, the baby recovery mechanisms (if deprived of oxygen) are not developed and he is not capable to wake up himself if his breathing becomes obstructed, like when he is sleeping with face down.
There is no technique to expect whether a baby is at risk for SIDS, although the occurrence of SIDS deaths has decreased in the last ten years. Creating a protected sleep environment for the baby is one way to help avoid SIDS.
For the first year of life, babies should be put to sleep on their backs. If put to sleep on their sides, they should be positioned with ...
... one arm ahead to prevent them from rolling over on their stomachs. Soft foam wedges can be purchased for just this purpose.
Avoid loose, airy bedding and make sure your baby's face is not blpcked. Be careful not to overheat your baby by over wrapping him or dressing him in too many layers.
Do not smoke and do not allow anyone else to smoke around the baby. be sure he has a firm mattress in a safety approved crib.
There are monitoring devices that can alert you if the baby ceased breathing.
There are some early signs you may want to consider and pay attention to :If the baby has had any life threatening events, such as turning blue, or an event requiring mouth to mouth resuscitation.
If the baby had older brother or sisterwho died of SIDS.
Sudden infant death syndrome is more common in premature infants, those who were tiny at birth, and those with upper respiratory tract infections.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is rare in breast fed infants.

To avoid it happening to you make sure to keep all well baby meetings to make sure his lungs are fully developed and to keep all immunizations.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is one of the greatest challenges that the World's Medical Research is faced with.
