The goal of the award is to help children with disabilities, their families, and their schools to access and use assistive technology to improve learning outcomes. The grant, administered by the United States Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, was funded through the Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities program, authorized under the Individuals with Disabilities Act. The disability grants are usually given in the form of block grants to the state by the federal government but the private foundations can also apply for the same. The U.S Department of Labor’s Disability Employment Initiative also funds the different projects for the disabled. There are also various nonprofit organizations that can apply for the funding if they work towards providing employment opportunities for the disabled. The grants for the disabled are mainly categorized into two sections, the one which comes as the direct grants and the others in the assistive forms. The direct grants are usually funded by the local community programs which provide the requisite funding for the purchase of equipments such as wheel chairs, hearing aids, computers modeled for the disabled, portable ramps for the disabled individuals. Some organizations even purchase these equipments and donate them to the needy. Since there are existing programs like the SSI/Disability provisions of the Social Security Act, hence these grants are usually unavailable from the federal government.

The grant for disabled that are awarded to the private foundations or the nonprofit organizations or many schools which work for the disabled persons help in providing various kinds of services like providing housing facilities, education facilities and even assisting them in earning a suitable living.
