All You Need To Know About Lasik Eye Surgery
What exactly is LASIK and what does the procedure involve? First and foremost, LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis. This form of eye surgery has surged in popularity in recent years and it is primarily for correcting vision problems in people who have been diagnosed with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
The way that laser vision correction surgery works is that it reshapes the cornea so that the light that travels through is able to properly focus onto the retina which is at the back of the eye. There are several surgical techniques that are utilized for reshaping the cornea and LASIK is just one of them.

First off, what are some of the advantages that LASIK eye surgery offers? Here's a breakdown:

While LASIK eye surgery offers a plethora of benefits, there are some disadvantages to it as well. Here are some:
There is no going back after LASIK eye surgery in terms of changes that have been made to the cornea.
LASIK eye surgery is a complex technical procedure. There is always a possibility that problems will arise while the doctor is or after cutting the flap. These problems can affect vision on a permanent basis.
On some rare occasions, LASIK can be responsible for a person losing their "best" vision". This is the highest degree of vision that you achieve while you have your contacts or eyeglasses on.
Potential Side Effects of LASIK Eye Surgery
While LASIK eye surgery is generally safe, there are some common side effects experienced by some patients. These side effects typically manifest 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. Some of these side effects include:
Glare
Seeing halos around photographs
Experience difficulty as you drive at night
Erratic vision
Dry eyes
How to Properly Prepare for LASIK Eye Surgery
Prior to the procedure, a coordinator will be meeting with you and you will be discussing what happens prior to and after the procedure. Typically, evaluation of medical history also takes place in addition to a comprehensive eye exam. Some factors that are measured include thickness of the cornea, refraction, pupil dilation, air pressure, and corneal mapping. Once the initial evaluation is through, the surgeon will discuss any concerns that you might have. The final step is scheduling the appointment for the procedure.
If you wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses, you will be instructed not to wear them at least three weeks prior to the evaluation. If you use other kinds of contact lenses, they should not be worn three days before the evaluation. Eyeglasses need to be brought with you to the evaluation.
On the day of the procedure, be sure not to apply eye makeup so that your eyes remain unobstructed and pure. Eat a good meal as well.
LASIK Eye Surgery
This is where a femtosecond laser is used for cutting a thin flap in the cornea. This flap is peeled away and reshaping is done to the corneal tissue underneath with another laser. Once the cornea underneath has been successfully reshaped, the flap is repositioned and the surgery is concluded.
Local anaesthesia (eyedrops) is used on patients during the procedure and it typically takes about 10 minutes before the entire procedure is over. It is necessary to have another person drive you home afterwards.
Regular visits to your doctor will be required a day, months, and even years after the procedure has been completed.
