1. Thread-forming: Thread-forming screws are intended for plastic as it deforms the material on screw entry. The risk involved with these screws is that they remain in the material forcefully resulting in increased threat of over-tightening the screw, which could break the material under high pressure.
2. Thread-cutting: Thread-cutting screws are classically employed for metal and wood removing some of the material and making a threaded trail for the screw. The major drawback associated with thread-cutting screws is that the threads may slip during disassembling the fastener.
These Self-tapping screws exist in multiple tip types, shapes and sizes. While selecting the screw size for your purpose, make sure that you have also considered the length of the screw tip. There must be sufficient space for the screw tip to completely enter into the material before the threading starts; otherwise it will result in thread stripping, which is not secured at all.
There is a feature associated with these distinctive screws. These screws come up with a razor-sharp, shooting tip or a blunt, flat tip. The purpose of designing sharp-tipped screws is to make a whole of their own in soft materials like plastic and wood for which they do not need a pilot hole. This hole ensures that the screw will go in without difficulty and will be placed in the approved manner. On the other hand, advantage of the flat-tipped screw is that it will not get jammed in material and break away. When you drill them in hard materials like metal sheet, you need to make a pilot hole in advance. For much thicker metal, more than one screw will be needed to drill through the surface. There is a special self-drilling and self-tapping screw available to drill the metal that saves lots of time and labor. The cost of these screws is much higher as compared to self-tapping and other normal screws.
