Kangaroo Pulled Out Of The Sea By Surfing Hero
A selfless Australian man has saved a kangaroo from the crashing waves on a beach on the Gold Coast.
Local surfer and general extreme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It wasn't heading in any clear direction and was being buffeted around in the swell. As he took a closer look it became apparent that it was a young kangaroo in the water, an animal not known for being seen in the water. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of his trusty surfboards he headed out to see if he could help the poor creature.
When he got to the Kangaroo it was very tired. The waves kept dumping it under the water and time and again, and it had been out their for a while by all accounts. An attempt was made by Neil to bring the kangaroo on the board with him but it kept struggling and ended up falling back off again. A number of people in kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Seeing that his method wasn't working, Neil decided to instead drag the kangaroo back along side his surfboard. Both made it safely to land but were in need of some rest when they got ...
... there.
The kangaroo has been named Ian (after the great Ian Thorpe) and experts are still baffled as to why he tried to swim in the sea. Kangaroos are definitely not known for their swimming abilities" states Harry Kernel of the Queensland Nature Park. They very rarely even enter water above their knees he states, but maybe this one had never been taught that by its parents.
Ian has been looked after at a local kangaroo sanctuary and his back to full fitness. When he keepers are happy they will release him into the wild and hopefully he has learnt his lesson about water. Being the modest person that he is, Neil played down the event and said that he was just acting out of instinct and it was nothing special.
