You go to an Internet Marketing seminar, meet people, shake hands, introduce yourself, and immediately they ask, "So what do you do?" and you say.. "Uhh...I own my own business. Nice. That should impress them.

The elevator pitch is an overview of a product, idea, service, or even yourself that can be delivered in the time it takes for an elevator ride (hence the name). It's usually between 100-150 words. What can you say in that length of time? How can you squish together all that you do in just a few seconds?

You sit down and write it out. You practice it in the mirror and you manipulate it in order to make it sound sexy and to inform the other person all that there is about you and your business. It's cutting to the chase because no one wants to hear a long drawn out story about why you started your business, how long you've been working on it, what your graphic designer said, the funny joke someone sent you about your niche, so on and so forth. They want the crux of what you do because they're waiting to tell you about their own business. If you keep yours short, hopefully they will too and then you can both ...
... go into details about what you do, and the real connection begins at that point.

You're constantly selling yourself and especially in seminars where you have the opportunity of making some awesome connections with people. But if you're opening line is "I sell sea shells by the sea shore" and not "I market a rare line of crustacean domiciles on the shoreline." you may have a problem. Fancy it up a bit, but still keep it short. Make sure you're not talking over people's heads either. If you make your elevator pitch a little too fancy you may just be alienating yourself. Keep it short, interesting, informative, and captivating. Think about this: Someone has just asked you what you do in your home based business. You have an audience for someone that wants to hear what you have to say. How can you best hold their attention and get them excited? Home business success begins when you can best hold their attention and get them excited and interested all at the same time.

Work your business into 100 words or so, really sell what you and your business is about. Memorize your elevator pitch because you never know when you'll need it. The elevator pitch can be used any way you want it: to sell your product, to describe your home based business, to gain a referral. Keep your goal in mind when writing it.

How to begin writing your elevator pitch:

- Keep it to 100-150 words, roughly about 60 seconds. Think about that elevator ride
- Use powerful action words and statements, you're wanting to drum up interest.
- Edit, re-edit, and edit again. Record yourself giving the elevator pitch and listen to yourself. Where could you improve?
- Memorize it

Give your elevator pitch in the mirror until it rolls off your tongue and it sounds completely authentic and not rehearsed. Make sure you have your business card handy as well that you can give to them, this way if you're only connection with that person is your elevator pitch and business card you'll be more fondly remembered this way.
