Dogs need to be programmed correctly, much like a TV remote. The television remote has all the functionality needed to control your television, but the human hand is needed to actually manipulate it. Dogs already have in them the innate intelligence to be trained, but a person needs to follow tips like these in order to bring the skills out.

Do not allow your pet to become complacent in his training. Establish a clear set of rules and stick with it at all times. Some dog owners make the mistake of thinking that once training has ended, no further action is required. Pets, just like humans, need to be reminded of the rules now and then. It is important that the training your dog receives is reinforced regularly.

Reward good behavior during training with control. You and the dog should both remain calm. Though you might be satisfied with this type of accomplishment, excitement may lead to your pet having diminished control over the situation. Be calm, expect calm, then reward appropriately.

You will have to repeat commands several times before your dog learns it. Repetition is key in training your dog. Some ...
... estimate that your pet must hear a command as many as 50 times to learn it. Firmly and steadily repeat the command. Remain patient and eventually the command will be learned.

Have a good time while training your dog. When you engage in play with your pet, your relationship becomes stronger; your dog will often respond better to you while training because of this enhanced bond. Training can be pretty fun, but make sure you get plenty of non-training play in too.

Call your pooch by his name to keep his attention focused on you. Use it as often as possible when you have your puppy during the first weeks, the puppy will make the connection. Put some thought into your dogs name, and choose one that isn't too long and that isn't too similar to other common words.

Teach your dog not to bark with a simple command. When your dog barks, show them a treat and repeat the order, for instance, 'be quiet' until it stops barking. Once your dog has stopped barking, you can award it with a treat. As time passes your dog will understand that his incessant barking is not allowed.

An effective training tool is to use different tones of voice for various commands or purposes. Your commands, praise, and scoldings should have different tones so that your dog can distinguish between them. Commands should be clearly stated in a firm tone. Corrections and reprimands must be spoken more firmly, while praise should be delivered in a natural tone.

Don't forget to praise good behavior. Positive reinforcement, shown through your tone and attitude, lets your dog know he has done a good job. Negative behavior should never be rewarded because then, your dog will associate this bad thing with a positive reward, which will cause your dog to only continue this bad thing.

Ensure that your dog knows the rules to follow, and be consistent; this will teach it right from wrong. This will require firm boundaries from everybody in your house. This can undo any progress you have made.

Even old dogs can be taught at least a few new tricks, and improving their behavior may still be possible. You need to start working on correcting the bad behaviors as soon as possible so injury is avoided to your pet or others.
