Is A Part-time Job Right For You?

Many teachers feel that their income levels combined with their early quitting time make them ideal candidates to get a part time job. While for some it may be completely necessary to get a part time job in order to make ends meet, others may have a little leeway in their budgets. If you are looking for part time jobs for teachers, consider these things before you begin applying.
First, do you have a family that is counting on you? In some ways this could push you towards a job, because your family is depending on you to provide the income that they need. On the other hand, your children need a parent at home who is engaged in their lives, providing meals, and taking care of their other physical needs. If your job would take too much time away from your family, you may not want to get one right now.
Second, is your schedule as flexible as you think? Some schools require teachers to be available for evening conferences, employee meetings, programs, and open houses. Your part-time job is going to require you to be able to work in most of your non-school hours. Are your really free during these hours?
You also ...
... want to consider if you have the energy to give yourself to two jobs. Teaching is a very draining profession. You are giving of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally every day in the classroom. Can you afford the added strain of a second job, even an easy one?
Similarly, is the job you are considering something you will enjoy doing? You should look forward, at least somewhat, to heading to your part time job. This is the only way it is going to work and not be a hindrance to your performance in the classroom.
As you look at your budget, be sure to factor in the other expenses related to your part time job. You are going to spend more time driving, so there will be additional gas expenses and wear and tear on your vehicle. You may need to hire someone to watch your kids, at least for a portion of the afternoon. You will end up eating meals out more regularly, and you might need to buy special clothes for your new job. If, after factoring in these expenses you are still going to have extra money, a part-time job may be a good idea. Be sure to consider the benefits against the risks carefully, however, before you begin putting your resume out there.
