In a nutshell, management is the act of organizing, leading, and coordinating with a group of people to come up with desired project results using available or required resources. This is the basic meaning that managers embrace. When it comes to implementing this, though, not all managers are alike. Every manager has his or her own style when it comes to handling people and directing them towards a common objective for a project. If there are different styles, how will you know which to follow? What will be most suitable for you and your team?

First, you need to be aware of the different management styles.

Six Key Management Styles

One of the most commonly used leadership or management styles is the Authoritative style. Also known as the Visionary style, this type of management directs a group of people by giving clear instructions. Motivation is often done through constructive feedback and persuasion.

Another widely-used style is the Affiliative style. With this, people come first. This style focuses more on the satisfaction and happiness of the people before considering the ...
... goals and objectives of a task. Basically, this style involves counseling and keeps conflict among employees at bay.

The Coercive or Directive style requires strict compliance and practises overall control. Discipline is implemented and threats are given to those who do not readily comply to the rules set by the manager.

The Pacesetting form of management is focused on achieving high standards and self-direction of the people. The manager who uses this style is usually engaged in multi-tasking and expects the team to easily fall in step.

Coaching is a management style that aims to provide professional development among team members. The manager usually encourages the team to further hone their abilities to improve their work.

The Participative management style is also referred to as the Democratic management style. This uses consensus and focuses on commitment. Motivation is often done by giving out rewards. It allows the team members to make inputs during decision-making sessions.

After learning about all these types of management style, you must take note of important things that may influence your choice of style.

Pointers on Using the Styles

One of the things that may influence your style of management is your work personality. How you manage your own work can say a lot about how you will be able to manage a group of employees. If you think that you still lack relevant management skills, be sure to engage in management courses to help you learn and develop the skills you need.

In taking management training classes, you should know your level of expertise. project management courses, business courses and others, offer various levels where you can get your qualifications from. If you must start at the first level, then go ahead. Build your abilities and move on to another level when you're ready.
