There is a tale that one often hears about the Mughal Emperor Jehangir, about how he looked upon Kashmir and remarked that it is a “heaven on Earth”. And if you’re one of those who’ve been to Kashmir, you could probably identify with this sentiment. Kashmir has long been the centre of attention among tourists, politicians, militants and others for one reason: its beauty. Each one of these several forces eyeing Kashmir aims to use it for a different purpose, but there can be no purpose greater than that of the adventurer who simply watches, appreciates and moves on enriched. Here are a few things to enrich your experience in Kashmir:

• The Dal Lake in Srinagar
Located in Srinagar, the Dal Lake is often referred to as “the Jewel in Kashmir’s crown”. Lined with royal gardens, or ‘baghs’, from the Mughal era and dotted with several houseboats and shikaras, the Dal Lake is a sight for sore eyes. What’s more, you don’t have to visit it. You can hire a houseboat and live on it, instead. It’s an expensive indulgence, but a worthwhile one. Book your Srinagar packages for the summer, for the lake ...
... freezes up entirely in the winter.

• Shalimar Bagh
The Shalimar Bagh, known by its generic name of the ‘Mughal Gardens’, is a sprawling expanse of greenery and pretty flowers. It was built by the Emperor Jehangir for his wife, Nur Jahan, and was at point considered to be the peak of Mughal horticulture. Built in a classically Islamic manner, these gardens are essential visits for any tourist, and give us a glimpse into the royal lifestyles enjoyed by our Mughal ancestors.

• The Gulmarg Valley
Gulmarg, or ‘The Pasture of Flowers’, as it means in translation is one of Kashmir’s most breathtakingly beautiful locations. While certain areas of Gulmarg remain inaccessible to tourists owing to political tensions with Pakistan, and the presence of the Line of Control nearby, the areas that are open to the public continue to attract tourists from around the world. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, visit in the winter when adventure sports abound in the valley.

• The caves of Amarnath
Tucked away in a region of Kashmir known as Anantnag lie the Amarnath Caves, a destination popular primarily due to religious reasons. A popular pilgrimage site not just in Kashmir, but for people all over India, Amarnath Caves attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who come to seek the blessings of Amarnath’s resident deity, Lord Shiva. Ignite your spiritual side by a visit yourself!

Kashmir today is unfortunately riddled with bouts of civil unrest, militant activity and political tension. The atmosphere is highly volatile, and certain areas are completely beyond bounds for tourists, both Indian and otherwise, while foreigners require special permissions to access other parts of the state. Nevertheless, this shouldn’t keep you from travelling to Kashmir and experiencing the charm of what is possibly India’s most beautiful holiday destination. Book your tour packages to Kashmir today!
