Fireworks are a very dominant culture in Mexico. If you happen to spend some evenings in downtown Puerto Vallarta around 9.00 p.m, you would witness the Marigalante pirate ship fireworks which brighten up every inch of the sky. It is even said by some of the locals that in Mexico you do not really need a reason to initiate fireworks. The fireworks range from handheld sparklers which are commonly known as the luces de bengala, to really loud firecrackers; all can be seen here in Puerto Vallarta.

Therefore, in honor of the tradition, amongst many competitors, like China and Brazil, on April 20th till the 24th the 11th International Fireworks Symposium was held in Puerto Vallarta. Puerto Vallarta was chosen as the official venue for the International Fireworks Art Symposium, 2009. Recently it has been announced, officially that, on May 30th as a prelude to the International Fireworks Symposium, a National Puerto Vallarta Fireworks Competition would be held. Interestingly, this festival coincides with Puerto Vallarta's 90th Anniversary of formally becoming a city. Therefore there can be twice the celebration!
