To finally publish your own book is a major achievement that feels brilliant. It is often the culmination of many hard months of work, and the first time you hold a book with your name on it is an unforgettable moment. Unfortunately, many people never get to that stage. They abandon their project midway through, and the ambition remains unfulfilled. The most common cause of this - and the biggest obstacle to a finished project - is almost always the authors themselves. Writers are often the harshest critics of their own work. In reasonable doses, this can be very useful. It prevents individuals from rushing and producing poor quality work. Too much self-criticism can become very damaging, however, and severely compromise the likelihood of a piece of work ever getting finished.
Controlling Self Doubt
There are many reasons why you might fear the time when you are ready to publish your own book. It's common to criticise yourself and think work you have done is not good enough. When so much time has been invested in a project, it becomes deeply personal. The fear of failure can drain both motivation and inspiration ...
... levels. It's important to control this effect and limit the damage it has on your ambitions.
Publish Your Own Book and Conquer Your Fear of Failure
The best way to beat self-doubt is simply to realise that you are probably judging your work far more harshly than anyone else is. This fact is hard to accept, but doing so might save your book from oblivion. Many people give up while writing their first draft. They read a passage back and negatively compare it to their favourite authors' works. This is natural, but counterproductive. You need to accept that a first draft is not intended to be the final version, and will be revised multiple times before it is completed. Comparing work to other writers can be useful, but a book doesn't need to be an all-time classic to be successful. It's important to try and work through your doubts and, at the very least, finish your first draft. You can then take a break before returning to it. This will give you chance to view your writing with some perspective. Another good way to gauge whether your writing is good enough is to let someone you trust read through it. That way you'll get an honest external opinion. Fears about the quality of writing are usually unfounded, and it is simply a case of accepting that your work is actually good enough. Once this barrier has been crossed, you can successfully publish your own book and be proud of it.
