The Rolls Of Luxury - Rolex
The watch brand is well established and even consists of a noted subsidiary brand known as Montres Tudor SA. These brands consist of some of the best watchmakers in the world and this is apparent in all their products. Every Rolex watch will have some, if not all of its components made or assembled by hand. The brand in itself is a product, for when you buy a Rolex, you also buy a part or a share in the heritage and history that is the brand. Rolex is not simply a watch manufacturer, it is an elite and highly sophisticated name in the timekeeping circles of society.
The brand was founded over a century ago by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in England. From their humble beginnings, the duo built up a small business and then moved to Geneva in Switzerland a few years later. Rolex is one of the top 100 most expensive watch brands in the world according to Bloomberg magazine. It is also the biggest luxury watch brand that produces around two thousand watches on a daily basis.
The world renowned brand of Rolex was not always known by that name, for it started out as Wilsdorf ...
... & Davis, named after the founders. The duo used to import fine Hermann Aegler watch mechanism components and place them in precision cases made by Denninson and other famous brands at the time. They used to sell these early wrist watches to high end jewelers who then used to rebrand them with their own names and sell them to customers. If anyone happens to come across a vintage watch made by them at the time, you can usually spot a W&D hallmark on the inner casing.
The level of precision that goes into a Rolex has been a tradition since the time of W&D. They were awarded a Class A Precision Certificate back in 1914 which was extremely rare at the time. These certificates were usually reserved only for Marine Chronometers since only they were crafted with absolute precision. The name Rolex was later derived for the purpose of keeping it short and simple for everyone to understand and remember, no matter the language or geographical location. Unconfirmed reports say that Rolex was derived from horological excellence which stands for exquisite clockwork.
The company shifted base from London to Geneva during the war of 1919. This move was done so that Rolex Watches would not be heavily taxed under the Wartime Taxes of England on imports and exports of luxury items. The company, to this day is a privately held trust and its shares are not traded.
The luxury watch brand is well known for quite a few innovations. Rolex was the first to bring out the premier waterproof wristwatch called Oyster in 1926. This was followed by the automatic date changing watch. Apart from technological achievements in the field of timekeeping, Rolex was the very first watchmaker to earn the certification of a Chronometer.
Rolex is a brand that is synonymous with style, comfort and elegant opulence. The brand itself has a certain style to it. Owning a Rolex is not just a sign of good taste, it is also a huge status symbol. The fact that Rolex watches are high precision chronometers is just an added advantage that has been taken for granted due to its century long relationship with high quality workmanship.
