Are You Doing This In Your Boxing Workout Drills?
One of the very basic errors boxers are making today is that they get in position to land the jab and follow up right and hand left hook, then they take several steps back while quickly removing themselves out of position to punch again.
The common mistake I'm writing about.
Many fighters have success with their jabs and combos alone, but they continue to take themselves back out of position to get off yet again. When I see this in my boxing school I teach my fighters that they were having success and taking that success right back away from themselves by moving too far back out of position after punching. You cant fight for position then take it away that quick. You get nowhere fast and build no momentum or real rhythm. What solves this common error? Moving side to side and on angles allows you to get out of the way of incoming punches while turning your opponent and allowing you to be in proper position to punch in on angles while scoring at will. This is really how you control and maneuver another fighter. By definition, this is what boxing is and what it's always been about. The disturbing thing is, ...
... many coaches and fighters fail to fully get this!
What boxing really is.
I know what the sweet science is and how to define it. Its to hit and not be hit, yet be in position to counter punch back and score. Many trainers forget this is what boxing really is. I dont forget this fact. There's more to boxing than just standing in front of another fighter and trying to knock each other out! The sweet science needs to be brought back into boxing fast if we want boxing to thrive for many more years to come. Defense today seems like it's just hurried through in the gym! You see many young boxers dropping their hands and moving straight back, that it's down right crazy.
How to correct it.
Once a boxer grasps punching stance, side to side movement, and angles. They really develop into a far more complete offensive and defensive fighter. They learn how to create more offensive openings due to mastering these new defensive skills. Fighters feel more comfortable and confident in the ring displaying these new skills. It just makes me shake my head writing about this when it is so common sense. I'm not trying to create another style of boxing or anything like that. I just teach what boxing has always been.
This is boxing and this is what I teach at my fight school. If we want boxing to thrive for years to come, we all need to do our part and bring the sweet science back to boxing. Boxing is truly an amazing art when taught like it should be. So lets get back to the fundamentals and bring it back like the greats did it.
