A home business mindset entails thinking and acting like an entrepreneur who has succeeded instead of being an employee or a worker. While being an employee is fine, especially if you like your job, you need to change your attitude once you start your own business because the rules are different and you won't make any progress if you don't. What follows are some principles to follow if you want to develop the right home business frame of mind.

Procrastination is something you need to conquer if you want to succeed with your home based business. It can be a number of things, including doing things that keep you busy but aren't generating results. Browsing forums, sales letters and comments made by industry leaders might seem like you are concentrating on your business, but none of these things will help you find more customers, leads or generate sales. So, when you are in front of your computer or on the phone, make sure you are really working on something that will move your business ahead and you aren't procrastinating.

Many people starting out with a home business are too focused on getting immediate results ...
... and therefore find it hard to stick to doing productive tasks. As an example, if you are a salesman and have to write a specific number of emails or make a certain number of calls, this needs to get done without you focusing too much on the results. You need to stick to it, even if it is quite discouraging that you don't make sales right after you first put in some effort. The only time you should redesign your strategy is if months have gone by with no results, therefore you shouldn't expect everything you do to generate an immediate result, especially since there are very few industries in which you can get instant gratification.

Outsourcing used be a term reserved for big corporations employing foreign cheap labor but now many small businesses resort to this approach as well. When you outsource, it just means that you are getting someone to do a specific job for you. This could be a person who lives in a country thousands of miles away or someone who lives around the corner. You want to find someone who has a great reputation and always follows through as well as being experienced enough to complete the job properly. You need to avoid spending money without making a profit, which is why everything you outsource should be profitable. The biggest chance you have of success is to start out slowly and eventually build up to outsourcing more and more tasks.

While it's not hard to develop the right attitude for a home business, you do need to put some work and commitment into it. When you establish your business and are working for yourself, you will see things a lot differently and your identity will change. You will start seeing opportunities left, right and centre and will try to find ways to profit from them.
