Even for expert developers, it is critical to decide the best of mobile platforms for an app development project. In the market of mobile, users have multiple platform choices. The most popular four platforms include iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. But you cannot design your first app for all the mobile platforms in trend. It is just unrealistic. So you need to choose a single platform for your app development and then extend the project to others. But how will you choose that single platform to launch your digital product? Here are some important points for you:

Learn by market research

If the mobile application is aimed at reaching as many people as possible, it is recommended that you chose the most popular platform. You can understand it demographically. For example, you can research that is iPhone the most preferred smartphone, or is it Android? Once you know the right information, you can choose a platform accordingly. Other things you can research include the number of users downloading apps from mobile stores and the rough idea of the revenues resulting from these downloads.

...
... For example, if you are building a business-specific application, you need to deeply study that what kind of mobile devices are used by people in that business. Without knowing the type of device a business domain is using, making an app for it will not be a wise move.

Consider the stability of platform

Do you remember the era of PDAs and then how did they become unfashionable because of smartphones? Companies introducing these devices made too many promises; still, they failed because of the lack of apps. There were no developers contributing to apps and thus the fashion faded out. At the peak of its popularity, PDAs only had not more than 1,000 apps. It’s just nothing when your compare the figure with numbers of apps in Google Play or The Store. Google is today’s most popular mobile OS with almost 80% market share. Second is iOS with 14% market share. Third and fourth are Windows and BlackBerry and their shares are not more than 4% and 3%.

How about features?

The last thing you can focus on is features. Although almost all the platforms have similar features but one can still be differentiated from others. Decision on mobile platform is also affected by its features. It is the roadmap of mobile app development that determines what features you want to add to the final product. If there is need of basic features, you can go with the concept of cross-platform mobile app development. You can choose Android if your app is going to include the NFC feature. And there are several features that are platform-specific and thus the decision should be taken accordingly.

These useful pointers are brought to you by experts in enterprise mobile application development.
