Any good dentist will tell you that prevention is always better than cure when it comes to dental health. Although the teeth is a very strong structure and can withstand prolonged exposure to chemicals and microorganisms that can damage the teeth, you do not want to wait for your teeth to get broken or damaged and then visit the dentist for corrective measures. Not only will it be a waste of time and money, but also a threat to your overall health.

Imagine having to pay thousands on a procedure that you could have avoided had you flossed regularly or brushed your teeth after a meal. These corrective procedures are there only if such an incident happens, but the sad thing is that they are becoming more and more frequent. More and more people are neglecting their teeth and instead relying on their dentist to fix whatever dental problems they might have.

If you’re one of those people who understand the importance of caring for your teeth, mouth, and gums, then here are some preventive measures that you can incorporate in your daily activities.

Brushing and Cleaning

Brush your teeth at least twice a ...
... day, preferably after a meal as well as before going to bed.

While brushing, place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, that location where your teeth meet the gums. Brush it back and forth in small, circular movements. Remember not to brush vigorously as it can damage your tooth enamel.

Include your tongue and cheeks when brushing, but do it gently to avoid injuries. Bacteria can also grow and thrive on your tongue and can cause bad breath, so be sure to clean it as well. There are brushes designed specifically for the tongue and are available in drugstores.

Make sure you brush all surfaces of your teeth, not just the front. Most cavities are found at the back of a tooth or at the chewing surface.

If you have enough funds to invest in an electric toothbrush, choose one that has the American Dental Association seal of acceptance. These efficient hand-held machines with back and forth motions are more effective at cleaning your pearly whites than with a regular toothbrush, including similar powered toothbrushes.

Remove food particles stuck between your teeth using a dental floss or an interdental cleaner. Some reliable cleaners include Oral-B, Interdental Brush, Reach Stim-U-Dent, Sulcabrush.

A mouthwash that contains a significant amount of fluoride can help prevent tooth decay.

You can also use disclosing tablets to see whether there are any remaining plaque on your teeth. They are available in most drugstores and will usually color any plaque that is left on your teeth after brushing.

Eating

Limit the amount of snacks you eat, especially those high in carbs such as candies, chips, pretzels, and other similar food. Food particles, especially sticky foods like chewy candies can remain on the surface of the teeth.

If you cannot give up on sweets, then buy a chewing gum that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener that has been found to slow down the growth of bacteria in the mouth.

Procedures and Practices

Do not forget to visit your dentist regularly for cleaning.

You can ask your dentist to give you dental sealants, which are protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your molars to protect them from damage and possible decay.

Make sure you schedule an oral exam at least once a year to check for any teeth problems. Your dentist is trained to look for and catch teeth problems and cavities that you would not notice on your own.

Do not hesitate to put to heart what you have learned and share it with your friends and loved ones so they too can start to live healthy and achieve beautiful smiles.
