Others, such as heroin, benzodiazepines or the prescription oxycontin, may produce extreme feelings of relaxation and calm. What most drugs have in common, though, is overstimulation of the pleasure center of the brain. With time, the brain's chemistry is actually altered to the point where not having the drug becomes extremely uncomfortable and even painful. This compelling urge to use, addiction becomes more and more powerful, disrupting work, relationships, and health.
Increasing alcohol addiction is often the basis of attention deficit disorder, depression, and other mental illnesses. Other short term effects of alcohol abuse are: loss of inhibitions and physical co-ordination, blurred vision, loss of balance and slurred speech, fatal road accidents, domestic violence, even attacking. Large amounts of alcohol in a single go can result in coma and vomiting.
