The other day, I took a stroll down to the beach, and near the pier was a gentleman in a lawn chair sitting on a grassy knoll writing in a large journal. The journal had huge sheets of paper like an inventors concept log, 14" X 17" or so. I asked him if he was an innovator or inventor and he said no. I asked him what he did and he told me that some folks call him a writer. I explained that I too did a bit of writing on occasion. He smiled, and I asked him what he writes, and if he was a novelist. He said he's written both novels and screenplays in his long career.
Indeed, I bet he has, and I bet he has the perfect strategy to do just that. The page he was working on was three-quarters full when he stopped writing to talk to me, just briefly. Then I was smiling and I realized he had it all figured out, he'd found a spot with a beautiful view to stay in his creative flow, and what a perfect sunny Southern California day it was, high 70s and perfect. I wished him continued success, he smiled and I continued my walk contemplating his wise choice to find a writing spot worthy of his best work.
Okay so, what should you ...
... take away from this? Well, how about understanding that you cannot force the words and high stress all the time will keep you from your best work. How about the axiom that "life is too short" to waste on deadlines. Do it because you love it, get in the creative zone by finding that place where everything is fine, life is good, and there is no stress. This is not to say that you should be a primadonna and only write when everything is perfect, rather to attempt to ditch as many ancillary stresses in your life and concentrate on your writing.
You don't have to take it from me, rather just watch the pros and consider what they are doing right, and what you might do to emulate their successes. They must know a thing or two. Well, I thought you should know, because you don't have to stress out with your writing, you just need to get to the right spot and get your mind into that creative flow, into the zone, and ready to write that award winning, payday screenplay. Please consider all this and think on it.
