I talk to many worship leaders around the world, and I would have to say that while they love worship leading, many of them hate practices. This is weird given that, as the worship leader, we are the really the ones who are supposed to be in charge! So, if practice is tense, dull or chaotic, we need look no further than ourselves. I for one, as the worship leader and worship pastor of my church, put my hand up and take responsibility for boring, useless, tense practices.hervey-bay-075

Recently I had one of my chief singers confide to me that she loves Thursday nights more than every other night. That was a wonderful report, and I would have to say that my practices are rarely dull or tense affairs. I believe that, to get the best out of your band and singers, you really should relax them and have fun.

I tend to be a jovial guy anyway, always quick with a joke or to see the funny side of things. I understand that not everyone is like that, and that if it goes too far or too long, the fun stuff can be very tedious for others to sit through! I still believe that the fun stuff in the right place serves ...
... to unite the band, relax the band and cause them to enjoy the entire worship experience.

I have many pages of suggestions on how to make practices fun and interesting in the Worship In A Nutshell course, so if you want some practical advice and ideas check that out.

In the mean time I offer the following suggestions:

NEVER lose your temper. Not for any reason at any time. You lose your temper and your lose the respect of those you are leading. Sorry to be blunt, but in my experience it is that simple.

Do not allow tension in the rehearsal at all. If a singer or musician cannot play a certain part, try a simpler part. If they cannot play the song, try a simpler song. Don't get angry, or make snide comments.

NEVER criticise a band member in public. Do this, and the rest of them will lose respect for you and your authority. You may have to make unpopular decisions, but do this with firm, gentle respect, and don't single an individual out for criticism.

Finally, find every excuse to have fun. Personally I like to burst into a pop song, taking everybody by surprise.
