Initially I had a strong desire to write but couldn't fit some writing time into my already jam-packed daily schedule. Giving lame excuses, building an alibi or indulging in self-pity had become the order of the day. With a lot of thought I concluded that there were two main constraints that needed to be tackled - when to write and where to write. Now I was on the lookout for the best time of the day and the best place where I could create a magical concoction of words.
• Best time of the day to write
Being an early bird, I felt mornings was the best time when my mind was fresh. Mornings according to me could instil that quiet, pleasant feelings and an aura of calm, unmatched for, during the rest of the day. I chalked out a schedule to put in a minimum of one dawn hour. But that lasted for only a few days as the burden and clutter of the morning chores lingered on my head. Mid-morning lured with pre-lunch preparations. After a sumptuous lunch, yawning dominated the scene. Evenings came with their own itinerary. Nocturnal hours too proved unproductive as well due to exhaustion and tiredness.
Each day came ...
... and went with not much difference. I waited patiently for that auspicious time when my writing would materialize. Alas! The jet never took off and even if it did, it crash landed due to bad weather (lack of substance). An hour here and there never helped much because I didn't know what to put on paper. After a serious thought I chanced upon an idea which according to me might do the trick.
As usual my mornings were full, but my mind was busy. As I scuttled through my work, I kept pondering on simple and small topics to write about. Mid-morning tea break was special as I jotted down points as they sublimed. A book was too big so a few plain sheets of paper stapled together often served the purpose. Post-lunch a short nap of 20-30 minutes pepped me up. With a steaming mug of coffee in hand, accompanied with pen and paper, I sat comfortably undisturbed for a spell of 2-3 hours. Ideas and topics already crafted took shape as words weaved meticulously into paras. Slow yet consistent writing kept me going till it developed into a habit. Ideally what worked for me may not be the solution for others too, but with constant trial and error one may strike gold.
• Best place to sit and write
Though amateurish, with set out plans I did make a substantial pitch at penning a few words. Sitting at the desk somehow it didn't always work. Browsing through advices from seniors in the field, I managed to allot a specific space in the house which I had loaded with books and files that assisted in my work. With all the necessary paraphernalia at my disposal, sometimes I ended up playing games on the PC. The idea then clicked, it is not the time and place that are always helpful. The urge to write was the magic wand. If I confined my writing to a specific area, I knew I would snore happily. To break the monotony and to create an encouraging atmosphere, change of location became the priority. What matters most is not the seating area but the ideas functioning in the brain.
