A Miscalculation Causes Runway Disaster

A plane had huge difficulties taking off recently in Australia when its computer was programmed with the wrong plane-weight, causing the tail to become massively damaged.

Human error was the primary cause of the problem according to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who said that it all came down to a miscalculation of the planes weight and the power it needed to lift. They are continuing to look into the incident on the Airbus a340 which luckily left all 257 passages without harm. Frustratingly determining the exact problems has been made difficult by the fact that much of the flight data recording equipment was damaged by the crash.

Three quarters of the runway had been covered by the time the plane had achieved full take off velocity. However, when the action was made to pull the nose into the air, nothing happened. The power to the engines was upped which raised the front end of the plane, but left the tail scrapping along the tarmac. ... wiped out and all the rear beacon lights on the plane were lost. The captain set the power to maximum and the plane took off but was not allowed to stay airborne for long. For safety reasons the planes fuel was dumped at sea and the plane returned to Melbourne airport.

Modern planes are fitted with lots of different computer systems and have miles and miles of cable that can go wrong. However, director of aviation safety, Julian Walsh has stated that it seems human error was the primary cause. Someone was not focusing when they entered the flight details and they were not double checked Walsh said. Both pilots have now quit but they were praised for their calm and correct actions
